Project Abhay is designed and developed by the Centre for Rural Development & Technology (CRDT), IIT Delhi, in collaboration with Foresight Foundation. The project is supported by the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH), Government of India. The project was rolled out in the month of March’24 with a target of screening a total of 50,000 truck drivers in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka & Tamil Nadu. The project is designed to support truck drivers' health, vision & wellbeing, thereby ensuring sustainable livelihoods and improved road safety.

About 55.1% of truck drivers were found to have compromised vision, 53.3% out of them found with distance vision and 46.7% near-vision issue. Project Abhay intervention able to rectify 93.7% of them by providing spectacle on the spot.

Why Truck Drivers?

Truck drivers are most essential workforce for Indian economy and looking at India@2047 vision, they will be playing the vital role in transforming Indian economy. Truck drivers in India endure many challenges and a difficult lifestyle. Key issues include long working hours, irregular shifts, extended periods away from family and various health concerns.

This is important to make this profession safe and aspiring to ensure sustainable livelihood for present workforce and to attract future generations to opt for truck driving as profession.

Findings & Statistics

During the implementation of Project Abhay following findings are recorded:

Physical Health:
44.3% of drivers exhibited borderline or above BodyMass Index (BMI), 57.4% had elevated blood pressure levels, and 18.4% showed borderline or high blood sugar levels.

Mental wellness:
Stress Levels: About 33.9% of drivers reported moderate stress, while 2.9% were found to have high stress levels, emphasizing the need for mental health support.

Eyesight:
About 55.1% of truck drivers were found to have compromised vision.

Vision:
Out of total drivers with compromised vision, 53.3% of them requiring distance vision correction and 46.7% needing near-vision correction.

Social Security:
48.3% of drivers lacked coverage under any social security schemes based on their submission and 68.6% were not insured.

Social Security:
68.6% reported that they do not have any insurance coverage before visiting the camp.

On-the-Spot redressal at Abhay Health Camps:

Project Abhay successfully conducted vision screenings of over 50000 truck drivers, addressing critical vision-related issues that impact road safety. These efforts identified the precalence of retractive errors among truck drivers and provided immediate solutions to correct their vision.
